This 75-minute course provides a practical framework for building effective negotiation and collaboration skills. Strong negotiation skills are essential for managing vendor and stakeholder relationships and for approaching complex contract negotiations with confidence.
The course contains 8 downloadable handouts meant for personal reference, reflection, and completion outside of the course. These optional exercises and templates do not count towards or impact course completion.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Law librarians in academic, law firm, and government law libraries who would like to develop or improve their understanding of contract negotiation and vendor relationship management.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After completing this course, participants will:
- Explain the steps in the negotiation process, including preparation, discussion, agreement, and implementation.
- Describe how to create a needs assessment, identify stakeholders, and develop a budget plan.
- Adapt communication strategies to different negotiation contexts and stakeholder audiences.
- Identify common contract clauses, red flags, and strategies to negotiate terms with vendors.
- Develop collaborative relationships among internal stakeholders by aligning shared goals and improving communication.
