Every library, whether it operates independently or as part of a larger organization such as a university or courthouse, should have a written animal policy. Such a policy, whether kept internal or made available to patrons, can proactively address issues related to accessibility, safety, and inclusivity. This program will cover essential elements to include in an animal policy, potential challenges and concerns in enacting these policies, and the legal distinctions between various categories of animals. While recognizing that not all animal types may be suitable in all library settings, the program will offer a balanced approach to crafting policies that consider diverse needs. Attendees will leave ready to return to their libraries with reasons that these policies should be implemented.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This program is designed for all library professionals, regardless of the type of library they work in—academic, private, government, public, etc. Whether participants are newer to the field or experienced professionals, this program will provide valuable insights for anyone involved in policy development or library operations. We encourage participants with diverse perspectives on the topic of animal policies to attend

TAKEAWAYS:

  1. Participants will identify the legal distinctions between service animals, emotional support animals, therapy animals, and pets, and be able to describe how these distinctions affect library policy.
  2. Participants will evaluate their library’s current practices and assess how an animal policy could enhance accessibility, safety, and inclusivity.
  3. Participants will discuss potential challenges in implementing an animal policy and compile strategies to address these issues effectively within their libraries and in collaboration with administration and other stakeholders.
